THE FOUNTAINS OF GREECE
Travelers who walked the ancient roads of Greece depended upon its fountains. These springs were more than beautiful places to pause; they were sources of life. A weary traveler could wash away the dust of the journey, fill an empty vessel, and continue with renewed strength.
Many of these fountains became gathering places where neighbors met, strangers were welcomed, and stories were shared. Water was a gift that reminded everyone of the goodness of the Creator, who “gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:25).
The Lord often compared His blessings to flowing water. Through the prophet Jeremiah He lamented, “They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water” (Jeremiah 2:13). Men still dig broken cisterns.
Some seek satisfaction in wealth, others in pleasure, and still others in the praise of men. Yet every earthly fountain eventually runs dry. Jesus alone can say, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst” (John 4:14). His grace satisfies the deepest longing of the soul.
The Christian is not merely invited to drink from Christ’s fountain; he is called to become a channel through which those living waters flow. Jesus declared, “He who believes in Me, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38).
A heart filled with Christ cannot remain stagnant. It overflows with kindness, encouragement, mercy, and truth. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). The refreshing influence of a godly life often speaks more loudly than many words.
There is another fountain the Scriptures celebrate. Zechariah foretold, “In that day a fountain shall be opened for sin and for uncleanness” (Zechariah 13:1). At Calvary that promise found its fulfillment as the blood of Christ was shed for the remission of sins.
We are washed, sanctified, and justified through Him (1 Corinthians 6:11). Peter declared that baptism is “the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:21). The fountain of grace is open to all who come to Christ in obedient faith.
One day the redeemed will need no earthly spring. John saw “a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Revelation 22:1). There, no thirst will ever return, for “the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17).
Until that day, let us keep drinking deeply from the Lord, walking in newness of life (Romans 6:4), and inviting others to the One who still cries, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37).

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the Fountain of living waters. Fill our hearts with the love of Christ until Your grace overflows into the lives of others. Keep us from seeking satisfaction in the empty wells of this world, and lead us each day to drink deeply from Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
