THE CROSS OF JOY
When most people think of the cross, they think only of suffering, shame, and sorrow. And yet the Scriptures reveal another wonderful truth. Beyond the agony was joy.
The writer of Hebrews declared that Jesus, “for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame” (Hebrews 12:2). Our Lord did not rejoice in the pain itself, but in what His sacrifice would accomplish. He saw forgiven sinners, redeemed souls, and a family gathered from every nation to worship Him forever.
The cross opened the door that sin had closed. Through His death, Christ made peace between a holy God and guilty mankind. As Isaiah foretold, “The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). What appeared to be the darkest day in history became the brightest hope for all who believe. The cross that brought tears to Calvary now brings songs to heaven.
There is joy at the foot of the cross because there is forgiveness there. David knew the blessedness of sins forgiven, and Paul echoed the same truth in Romans 4:7-8: “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.”
No burden is too heavy for the Savior, and no stain is too deep for His precious blood. Those who come to Him in repentance and faith find mercy instead of condemnation, for “there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
The joy of the cross does not end with salvation. It continues each day as believers walk in newness of life. We are reminded in Galatians 2:20 that we have been crucified with Christ, and it is Christ who now lives in us. Though trials remain, His presence fills our hearts with a joy that circumstances cannot steal. As Jesus promised, “Your sorrow will be turned into joy” (John 16:20).
One day the joy of the cross will reach its glorious fulfillment. Every tear will be wiped away, death will be no more, and the victory purchased at Calvary will be fully realized. The cross was never the end of the story. It pointed beyond the tomb to the resurrection, the kingdom, and everlasting life.
If you have never trusted Christ, come to Him today. Turn from your sins, believe that Jesus died for you and rose again, and confess Him as Lord. He invites all who labor and are heavy laden to come to Him, and He will give them rest (Matthew 11:28). The cross that once stood as an instrument of death has become the doorway to eternal joy for all who believe.

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son to endure the cross for the joy set before Him. Thank You that through His sacrifice we have forgiveness, peace, and the hope of everlasting life. Help us to live each day in the joy of our salvation and to share the message of the cross with those who need Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
