ALWAYS ABOUNDING IN THE WORK OF THE LORD
The closing exhortation of 1 Corinthians 15 is one of the most stirring admonitions in the New Testament. After presenting overwhelming evidence for the resurrection of Christ and the future resurrection of the faithful, Paul concludes with a practical charge: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
The word “therefore” connects Christian duty with Christian doctrine. Because Christ has conquered death, believers have every reason to persevere in faithful service.
Biblical truth is never intended merely to inform the intellect. It is designed to transform conduct. The certainty of eternal life should produce steadfast lives marked by diligent obedience.
The expression “always abounding” suggests more than occasional enthusiasm. It conveys the idea of excelling, overflowing, and increasing in the service of God.
Christianity is not satisfied with minimal commitment or convenient obedience. The faithful disciple continually seeks opportunities to glorify God through worship, evangelism, benevolence, and holy living (Galatians 6:9-10; Colossians 3:23-24).
Spiritual growth is not measured by comparison with others but by continual progress in conformity to the will of Christ. Those who understand the value of eternity recognize that every act of faithful service possesses lasting significance.
Paul further assures Christians that their labor “is not in vain in the Lord.” Human efforts often end in disappointment, but work performed according to God’s will never loses its value.
Though results may not always be immediately visible, the Lord remembers every faithful act (Hebrews 6:10).
Even when opposition arises, or discouragement threatens, the Christian has confidence that God will fulfill His promises.
Therefore, let every disciple remain steadfast in the truth, immovable against error, and always abounding in the work of the Lord, for the resurrection guarantees that faithful service today will be rewarded in eternity (Revelation 22:12).
