WHY IS THE UNIVERSE SO BIG?

God is not like us. He is totally above us and different from us. He is outside of us. He has to be outside of the universe and everything in it, including humanity, in order to have created it. So whatever your idea of God is like, it is not big enough. It cannot be. We have no concept of the huge, vastness of God. He is beyond human comprehension.

That is one of the first things that people need to accept about the God of the Bible. He is beyond our ability to understand. So no matter how you let your mind go, and let your imagination “run wild” if you will, you will never be thinking in fully adequate terms.

We have an idea of the fact that the universe is vast. There is more than we will ever be able to know about, much less explore. And God must be bigger than the universe. So God is bigger than any thought that we can think. Bigger than the universe. Let that sink in.

So how does a God who is so big, so much bigger than humans, so much greater than any human thought, communicate with us? So many people do not understand what is most important to this “big” God. It is people.

People are not as important to us as they should be. We should care more about people than we do about anything. Because God cares more about people than we realize. Everything in this universe was created for humanity.

Those who reject that idea simply do not understand the concept of love. They do not understand how important relationships are to God. We should. But even here on earth, we fail to understand how important people are.

We should see the worth of every single individual as a unique creation of God, because everyone is created in the image of God. We put other things before people because we do not understand how important they are. And the reason that everyone is important is because God created us.

Do you understand that God created the universe so that we would know about his love for people? He is a God of love. His nature is to love. But it is not stars and rocks and trees that he loves. It is people. So God created a universe that only he could create.

I have heard people say, “There has to be other life out there. We cannot be alone in the universe.” And when you ask them why it has to be that way—why they would say that—they reply, “Why would God create such a vast universe just for one planet?” Now no one can say for certain—because the Bible does not deal with it—whether or not there is other intelligent life out there. But based on what the Bible teaches, there is no reason to think there is.

And whatever philosophical problems this causes you I believe are unnecessary. You do not think like God. We are trying to analyze it from a human standpoint. If the people on this earth are important enough for God to become a man and die for us, why is it so unbelievable that he would create a universe for us?

But what is the point? Why would he do that? Why create such an immense universe when even the people on earth will never know how immense it is? Again, we are thinking like humans.

There’s nothing wrong with that, that is all we can do because we are human. But it is wrong to think that because something doesn’t make sense to us, then the conclusions we come to based on our limited reasoning ability and knowledge are the way it has to be.

Psalm 19 says that the universe declares the glory of God. One of the reasons that the universe is so vast is so that we will be drawn to the greatness and the splendor of God. We will know that he exists.

The universe proves the existence of God. It is not the only proof of God’s existence, but it is certainly one of them. And yet mankind in arrogant folly uses the very thing that is designed to cause us to believe in God to cause us to reject him.

What we should be doing is looking at the universe and saying there has to be a God. There is no way that all of this could have “just happened.” Instead, we very foolishly say, “Why would God create an entire universe if all he cares about is what is going on on planet earth?”

And since the Bible teaches that God is only concerned about what happens on this earth, only concerned about the people here, and that does not make sense to them, then therefore they reject belief in him. Absolute nonsense.

Let the universe teach you about the greatness of God. Let it teach you about how big he is. How powerful he is. How majestic and glorious he is. And let it cause you to reflect on the fact that if we are going to know such a God personally, it will only be when and if and in the way that he desires for us to know him. And all of that has already been answered in the life and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord.
