THE ROOTS YOU NEVER SEE
Most people admire a towering oak tree because of what rises above the ground. Its wide branches provide shade, its strong trunk withstands storms, its beauty catches everyone’s attention. It truly is a marvelous thing to consider. I don’t know a lot about botany, but what I do know, I am amazed by.
And I know that the greatest part of the tree is hidden. Beneath the surface is a vast network of roots that often stretches as far as the branches reach. Those unseen roots anchor the tree and quietly draw the water and nutrients it needs to live.
The Christian life is much the same. Others may notice our words, our worship, or our service, but our true strength is found in what no one else can see. A believer who spends time with God in prayer, feeds daily on His Word, and walks in humble dependence upon Christ develops deep spiritual roots (Colossians 2:6-7). When the storms of life arrive—and they always do—it is not appearance that keeps us standing, but our relationship with the Lord (Matthew 7:24-25).
Trials do not create faith as much as they reveal where our roots have been growing. The prophet Jeremiah described the righteous man as a tree planted by the waters, whose roots spread out by the river. Even in seasons of drought, it continues to bear fruit because its life comes from a source that never runs dry (Jeremiah 17:7-8). Likewise, those who delight in God’s Word are compared to trees planted by rivers of water, bringing forth fruit in their season because the Lord Himself sustains them (Psalm 1:1-3).
If your life feels shaken today, do not focus first on the wind. Turn your attention to your roots. Draw near to Christ, who is the true Vine, for apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:4-5). The deeper your fellowship with Him becomes, the steadier you will stand when the storms come. God is far more interested in growing your character than simply calming your circumstances, and He faithfully uses both sunshine and rain to make His children mature (Romans 5:3-5; James 1:2-4).

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to sink my roots deeply into Your Word and into the love of Christ. When the winds of trouble blow, keep me steadfast through Your strength rather than my own. May my life bear fruit that brings glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
