THE CUNNING SERPENT

From the opening pages of the Bible, the serpent appears as an enemy whose greatest weapon is not strength but subtlety. “Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made” (Genesis 3:1).

Satan did not storm the Garden with violence. He slipped into it with deception.

He did not begin by denying God outright. He first questioned God’s word, planting seeds of doubt that would soon bear the bitter fruit of disobedience.

His methods have not changed. He still seeks those whom he may deceive through lies that appear reasonable (2 Corinthians 11:3, First Peter 5:8).

The Serpent Questions. The first words from the serpent were, “Has God indeed said…?” (Genesis 3:1). The attack began with uncertainty.

If the enemy can persuade us to doubt God’s word, he has already gained dangerous ground. Every temptation begins with a challenge to divine truth.

The Christian must answer every question raised by unbelief with confidence in what God has spoken. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalms 119:105).

Faith does not stand upon human reasoning but upon the unchanging voice of God (Romans 10:17; Hebrews 13:8).

The Serpent Contradicts. Having planted doubt, the serpent became bolder. “You will not surely die,” he declared (Genesis 3:4).

What God affirmed, Satan denied. What God warned against, Satan celebrated. He portrayed rebellion as freedom and sin as wisdom.

The devil still paints disobedience with attractive colors while hiding its deadly consequences.

But God’s word cannot fail.

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Every promise of Satan ends in emptiness, while every promise of Christ ends in everlasting joy (John 10:10, Titus 1:2).

The Serpent Corrupts. Eve believed the lie, took the fruit, and gave it to Adam, and sin entered the world through their disobedience (Genesis 3:6; Romans 5:12).

What began with a conversation ended in corruption, shame, and separation from God.

Sin always promises more than it delivers and costs more than anyone expects to pay.

Still even in humanity’s darkest hour, God promised that the Seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15).

That promise found its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who destroyed the works of the devil through His death and resurrection (Hebrews 2:14; 1 John 3:8).

The ancient serpent still whispers, still questions, still contradicts, and still seeks to corrupt.

But believers are not left defenseless.

We overcome by holding firmly to God’s word, resisting the devil through steadfast faith, and fixing our eyes on Christ, who has already won the decisive victory at the cross (James 4:7; Ephesians 6:10-17; Colossians 2:15).

The serpent may be cunning, but our Savior is victorious, and those who listen to Him will never be put to shame.

____________

Heavenly Father, Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, who has conquered the serpent and secured our hope forever. Strengthen our faith each day until we stand victorious in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
