LISTEN TO HIM
The mount of transfiguration was not merely a place of dazzling glory. It was a classroom where Heaven declared that Jesus Christ stands above every voice that has ever spoken.
Peter, James, and John beheld their Lord shining with a brilliance that no earthly tongue can fully describe. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as the light.
Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, representing the Law and the Prophets.
But here the greatest lesson was not what the disciples saw. It was what the Father said. “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” (Matthew 17:1-5).
It is easy to become fascinated with great men and women of God, ancient traditions, or religious systems.
Moses faithfully delivered God’s law, and Elijah boldly defended the truth in dark days (Exodus 20:1-17, 1 Kings 18:36-39). But neither could save a single soul.
They pointed beyond themselves to the One who fulfills every promise.
The Father’s command settled forever who must have first place. We are not called to follow Moses above Christ or Elijah above Christ.
We are commanded to listen to Jesus, for “God has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2; John 6:68).
Peter, overwhelmed by the moment, wanted to build three tabernacles, placing all three men side by side.
While he was still speaking, the cloud overshadowed them, and the Father’s voice interrupted him (Matthew 17:4-5).
Heaven would not allow the Son of God to be placed on the same level as even the greatest servants.
Christ is not merely another prophet. He is the eternal Son, the Word made flesh, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:1-3; John 1:14; John 1:29).
Every faithful preacher must decrease so that Christ alone is exalted.
When the fearful disciples lifted their eyes, they “saw no one but Jesus only” (Matthew 17:8).
What a blessed ending to the vision.
Moses disappeared.
Elijah disappeared.
Jesus remained.
This is the hope of every believer.
Every shadow gives way to the substance.
Every promise finds its “Yes” in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Every sacrifice points to His cross (Hebrews 10:1-10).
Every longing of the heart finds its fulfillment in Him.
The Christian life grows stronger as our eyes become less occupied with ourselves and more occupied with Christ alone.
The Father’s command still charges every every generation.
The world shouts with countless voices demanding our attention.
False teachers promise easier roads.
Human wisdom boasts of better answers.
Even sincere religious traditions can distract us from simple obedience.
God’s word remains unchanged.
Listen to Jesus when He calls sinners to repentance (Luke 13:3).
Listen to Him when He says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28-30).
Listen to Him when He says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
There is life in no other voice.
____________
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing the glory of Your beloved Son. Teach us to turn away from every voice that competes with His. Open our ears to hear Him, soften our hearts to obey Him, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus alone. May Your word shape our thoughts, guide our steps, and strengthen our faith until the day we see our Savior face to face. In His holy name, Amen.
