MEDGAR EVERS: A LIFE THAT STILL SPEAKS
On this day, July 2, we remember the birth of Medgar Evers, born in 1925, whose life became a testimony of courage in the face of hatred. He believed that every person was created with dignity and deserved equal justice under the law.
Though he endured threats, intimidation, and constant danger, he refused to surrender to fear. His commitment proves that real courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to do what is right despite it.
God calls His people to “do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). The Bible also tells us, “Learn to do good. Seek justice, rebuke the oppressor” (Isaiah 1:17).
Those words continue to challenge every generation to stand for righteousness with humility and love.
Medgar Evers understood that lasting change often comes through sacrifice. His voice was silenced by an assassin’s bullet on June 12, 1963, but his witness was not. His death stirred the conscience of a nation and strengthened the resolve of countless people to pursue justice without hatred or revenge.
As a follower of Christ, I remember that Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). We are also reminded, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).
While the methods and missions of individuals differ, the call of God’s word remains the same. We are to be peacemakers, truth tellers, and people who reflect the love of Christ even in a broken world.
As I honor Medgar Evers on his birthday, let us thank God for those who have stood with courage against injustice and prayed for a better tomorrow. May we never allow bitterness to replace compassion or anger to replace love.
Instead, may we follow Jesus Christ, who alone changes hearts and reconciles people to God and to one another.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of courage shown by those who stood for justice at great personal cost. Help us to love our neighbors, pursue peace, defend what is right, and proclaim the hope of the gospel in both word and deed. Make us faithful to honor You in every generation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
