JARS OF CLAY

Paul says, “We have this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Corinthians 4:7). The treasure is the Gospel, but the vessel is us. Clay jars were ordinary, fragile, and easily broken. God could have chosen angels or perfect people to carry His message, but He chose ordinary, imperfect people. Our weaknesses do not disqualify us from being useful to God. In fact, they remind us that the power belongs to Him and not to us.

Sometimes we become discouraged because we see our cracks, our failures, our weaknesses, and our limitations. We think God could never use someone like us. But the beauty of a jar of clay is that its value is not in the jar itself. The treasure inside is what matters. Paul said we are “hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed” and “struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). We may be fragile, but God’s grace sustains us.

So don’t despise the vessel God has chosen to use. You may not be strong enough, wise enough, or perfect enough to accomplish His work on your own. That is exactly the point. When people see God working through someone who knows his own weakness, the glory belongs to God. We are only jars of clay, but we carry a treasure beyond price. The vessel may be fragile, but the treasure is eternal.
