GOD HAS SPOKEN THROUGH HIS SON
There is a holy majesty in the opening words of Hebrews. They lift our thoughts above the noise of this passing world and fix our gaze upon the eternal voice of God.
“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2).
Through the centuries God revealed His will by dreams, visions, prophets, and mighty acts. Every message was true, yet every message pointed forward to the perfect revelation that would come in Jesus Christ.
The Father’s final and fullest word is not merely a doctrine but a Person.
The Son stands above every prophet because He is the heir of all things. Everything belongs to Him by divine right.
The worlds themselves were made through Him, and all creation bears the marks of His wisdom and power (Hebrews 1:2; John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16).
The stars that glitter across the heavens, the mountains that pierce the clouds, and the smallest flower blooming in the field all testify to His creative hand.
To know Christ is to know the One through whom all things exist.
Hebrews then lifts the curtain a little higher. Jesus is “the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” (Hebrews 1:3).
The glory of God, too radiant for sinful eyes to behold, shines perfectly in the face of Christ. Whoever desires to know what God is like must look to Jesus.
His compassion toward sinners, His holiness, His truth, His mercy, and His perfect obedience reveal the very heart of the Father (John 14:9; 2 Corinthians 4:6).
Still, Christ did not merely reveal God.
He accomplished what no prophet could ever accomplish. “When He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3).
There is profound comfort in those words, “by Himself.” No angel shared the burden. No man could assist Him.
Alone He bore the cross.
Alone He satisfied divine justice.
Alone He opened the way into the presence of God (Isaiah 53:5-6; 1 Peter 2:24; Romans 5:8).
The fact that He sat down declares that His sacrifice is complete.
Under the old covenant the priests stood daily because their work was never finished. But our Great High Priest offered one perfect sacrifice and then sat down in triumph.
Nothing can be added to His finished work. Those who trust Him rest in a salvation fully accomplished by His grace and received through obedient faith (Hebrews 10:11-14; Ephesians 2:8-10).
Every generation must answer the same question. Will we listen to the passing voices of this age, or will we hear the voice of God’s beloved Son?
Philosophers offer opinions.
Governments issue decrees.
Cultures continually change.
But Christ remains “the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
Since God has spoken through His Son, let us treasure His word, obey His commands, and rejoice in the salvation He has secured.
