THE TRUTH WILL MAKE YOU FREE
The truth will make you free if you know it (John 8:32). They say what you don’t know can’t hurt you, but in the case of Jesus, who you don’t know will be very detrimental to your life and soul. You need to know Christ.
Knowing him in a relationship of joy and intimacy is a very simple matter. And by knowing him, you will be made free from so many things. Your life will be exactly what your life is supposed to be.
All the things you are searching for that make for meaningful living will be yours in Christ. Everything comes down to him. He satisfies the soul.
David said if the Lord is our shepherd, we “will not want” (Psalm 23:1). That means that we will not lack for anything. We will have everything that we need. And this comes about through truth. Not lies, not false religion, not the deception of the devil, but only through the truth of God. He is the only one who is the source of all truth. The devil does nothing but lie. God always tells the truth.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” When Jesus said that in John 8:32, he was talking about himself. Which is the same as saying, “If you know me, you will be free.”
Just a bit later, in verse 36, he said, “If the Son makes you free, you will be truly free.” So “knowing the truth” in verse 32 is the equivalent of knowing the Son, Jesus Christ, in verse 36.
This is not talking about knowing Bible doctrines. It is talking about a relationship with Christ. And the freedom that he offers is freedom from everything that could possibly bind you. Freedom from fear. Freedom from false religion. Freedom from the control of other people. And most of all, freedom from sin.
This section of the Bible, like so many others, sums up very clearly and directly what we are to be focused on. Everything that we need is found in Jesus. Think about him and stay with him.
