#323 DON’T DRIFT 19-23-26
Nobody intends to drift away from God. It happens gradually, often without our realizing it. A boat does not have to fight the current to be carried downstream. It simply has to stop moving in the right direction. The same thing can happen in our relationship with the Lord.
Hebrews 2:1 warns us, “Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.” Notice that drifting is something that can happen when we fail to give proper attention to the things of God. We become distracted by the cares of life, occupied with our own interests, and comfortable with spiritual neglect. Before long, the things that once mattered most begin to matter less.
We must remember that faithfulness requires attention. We cannot neglect the Bible and expect to remain grounded in God’s truth. We cannot neglect prayer and expect our fellowship with Him to remain strong. We cannot neglect the example of Jesus and expect our lives to become more like His.
The answer is to keep our eyes on Christ and our hearts open to God’s word. We must continually examine our lives and make the necessary corrections. Do not wait until you have drifted far away to turn around. Stay close to Jesus today.
