#278 THE COST OF REFUSING GOOD COUNSEL 10-13-26

It’s powerful. 1 Kings 12 records a turning point in Israel's history. Solomon had died, and his son Rehoboam was preparing to take the throne. The people asked for relief from the heavy burdens imposed during Solomon's reign. Rehoboam sought advice, but his response to that advice would divide a kingdom.

Three lessons emerge from this tragic account.

THE VALUE OF WISE COUNSEL

The older men who had served Solomon advised Rehoboam to become a servant to the people and answer them with kindness. They understood that leadership was not merely about exercising authority, but about earning trust (1 Kings 12:6-7).

Rehoboam, however, rejected their counsel and consulted the young men who had grown up with him. They encouraged him to increase the people's burdens and demonstrate his power (1 Kings 12:8-11).

We must be careful about whose advice we follow. The loudest voice is not necessarily the wisest, and the advice that flatters our pride may lead us toward disaster. Proverbs 12:15 reminds us that the wise listen to counsel. Humility allows us to learn from those whose experience may see dangers our enthusiasm overlooks.

THE DANGER OF HARSHNESS

Rehoboam answered the people harshly, declaring that he would make their yoke heavier rather than lighter (1 Kings 12:13-14). His words communicated strength, but they demonstrated poor judgment.

There is a difference between being firm and being cruel. Authority does not give us permission to disregard the burdens of others. Parents, preachers, elders, and leaders must remember that the way we speak can either strengthen relationships or destroy them.

Paul instructed Christians to let their speech always be with grace (Colossians 4:6). A harsh answer may win an argument while losing a heart.

THE CONSEQUENCES OF PRIDE

Rehoboam's decision helped bring about the division of the kingdom. Ten tribes rejected his rule and followed Jeroboam, fulfilling the judgment God had announced through Ahijah (1 Kings 11:29-31; 12:16-20).

One man's refusal to listen produced consequences far beyond himself. Our decisions likewise affect families, congregations, and communities. Pride rarely confines its damage to the person who possesses it.

Let us seek wise counsel, speak with kindness, and lead with humility. The strongest leader is not the one who demands the most, but the one who understands the responsibility of serving others.

Heavenly Father, please give me a humble heart that welcomes wise counsel. Guard my tongue against harshness and my spirit against pride. Help me consider how my decisions affect others, and teach me to lead through service, patience, and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
