#264 LIFE IS LIKE A GARDEN 10-10-26

Life is like a garden. What we plant today influences what we will harvest tomorrow. A garden does not become beautiful overnight, and neither does a life of faith. Both require patience, attention, and a willingness to work when the results are not yet visible.

Every gardener understands that the harvest begins with a seed. A small seed buried in the ground may appear insignificant, but given the right conditions, it can grow into something remarkable. Our words and actions work much the same way. A kind word spoken to a discouraged soul may restore hope. A lesson taught to a child may influence generations. A simple act of kindness may remain in someone’s memory for years. Jesus taught that even giving a cup of cold water in His name would not go unrewarded (Matthew 10:42).

But gardens also teach us about weeds. If left unattended, weeds can choke the plants that should be growing. In our lives, bitterness, envy, pride, and selfishness can do the same thing. We cannot expect to cultivate Christlike character while continually feeding attitudes that oppose Him. We must allow God’s word to correct us, challenge us, and shape the way we think and live.

The apostle Paul made this principle unmistakably clear: “whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7). He then encouraged believers not to grow weary in doing good, promising that we would reap in due season if we did not lose heart (Galatians 6:9). Sometimes we plant seeds of faithfulness without seeing immediate results. We pray for someone, teach someone, serve someone, or share the gospel, and the outcome seems uncertain. Yet we must not confuse a slow harvest with a wasted effort.

Above all, we must remember that spiritual growth depends upon our relationship with Jesus Christ. He declared Himself to be the vine and His disciples the branches, teaching that apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5). Lasting fruit comes from abiding in Him.

So plant goodness wherever you go. Water your faith with God’s word. Pull the weeds of resentment before they take root. Be patient with people who are still growing.

You may never see every harvest your life produces, but make sure you spend your days planting seeds that honor God and bless others.
