#259 ALMOST A MEMORY 10-9-26

There comes a time when yesterday seems closer than tomorrow, when familiar faces begin to disappear from the places where we once saw them, and when the sound of a loved one's voice becomes something we struggle to recall. Life moves quickly, and some of the people who once occupied the center of our world eventually become almost a memory.

James reminds us that our life “is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). We arrive, we live, we love, and eventually we leave this world behind. The years that once seemed endless become pages in a book we can no longer turn back through. That truth should not make us despair, but it ought to teach us to number our days and apply our hearts unto wisdom (Psalm 90:12).

First, remember the people who matter. Tell someone you love them while they can hear your voice. Offer forgiveness while there is still time. Make the telephone call, pay the visit, and speak the encouraging word. We never know when an ordinary conversation will become a treasured memory. Love should not be postponed until all we have left is the recollection of someone who is gone.

Second, recognize the God who remains. People change, circumstances change, and even our strongest memories grow dim. But the love of God does not fade with the passing years. The Psalmist declared, “Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you!” (Isaiah 46:4). When earthly things slip from our grasp, we can still rest in the hands of the One who never forsakes His people.

Third, rejoice in the hope of eternity. For those who belong to Christ, death does not have the final word. Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live” (John 11:25). The gospel offers more than memories of yesterday. It offers the hope of life with Christ forever.

One day, every one of us will become a memory to someone. Our photographs may remain, our words may be repeated, and our influence may continue long after we are gone. But the greatest question is not how long people will remember us. It is whether we have faithfully lived for the Lord who remembers us.

Life is brief. Love deeply. Forgive freely. Serve faithfully. And walk with Jesus, because when this earthly life becomes almost a memory, the promises of God will still stand.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the people, moments, and memories that make life precious. Teach us not to take another day or another person for granted. Help us show love while we have the opportunity, forgive before bitterness takes root, and live in a way that honors You. When memories bring sadness and the years remind us of how quickly life passes, strengthen our hearts with the hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ. May our lives leave a legacy of faith, kindness, and love, and may our greatest hope always be found in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
