#218 JESUS OUR MASTER 10-1-26
Jesus is our Master. To call Jesus “Lord” is to recognize His authority over our lives. He said, “You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am” (John 13:13). The Christian life begins when we understand that Jesus has the right to lead us, correct us, command us, and send us.
MASTER OF OUR MINDS
Jesus must first become Master of our minds. The world constantly competes for our attention, filling our thoughts with fear, anger, ambition, pleasure, and distraction. But Paul tells us, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). We cannot follow Jesus while allowing the world to determine how we think. His words must shape our thinking, His wisdom must guide our decisions, and His truth must govern our understanding. “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
MASTER OF OUR MOVEMENT
Jesus is also Master of our movement. He does not call us merely to believe something about Him. He calls us to follow Him. “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). Following Christ means going where He leads, doing what He commands, and serving where He sends us. Abraham went out “not knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8). The Master does not always give us the entire map. He gives us the next step.
MASTER OF OUR MISSION
Finally, Jesus is Master of our mission. We are not here simply to occupy space, accumulate possessions, and wait for heaven. We have been entrusted with work. Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). Paul understood this when he wrote, “For me to live is Christ” (Philippians 1:21). Our time, abilities, resources, conversations, homes, churches, and opportunities can all become instruments in the Master’s hands.
Jesus purchased us with His blood, and therefore He has every right to rule us. Yet His mastery is not cruel. The One who commands us is the One who washed His disciples’ feet. The One who calls us to carry a cross carried His own cross first. The One who asks us to surrender everything gave everything for us.
Jesus is our Master. Therefore, let Him master our minds, direct our movement, and determine our mission. The greatest freedom in life is found not in having no master, but in belonging completely to the Master who loved us enough to die for us.
