THE STEADFAST LOVE OF THE LORD

The steadfast love of the Lord is not a passing emotion. It is the unchanging heartbeat of God’s dealings with His people.

The Bible opens with a Creator who spoke the heavens into existence, yet stooped to make man in His own image (Genesis 1:26–27). Even after sin entered the world, God sought the guilty with the question, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9).

From the beginning, His love pursued those who had wandered from Him.

When Moses stood before the Lord, God revealed His own character, saying that He is “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth” (Exodus 34:6-7).

David rejoiced that “the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy,” and that “as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalms 103:8, 12).

Again and again the refrain rises, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (Psalms 136:1, 23-26).

Like waves upon the shore, the testimony of God’s word never tires of declaring His steadfast love.

Jeremiah looked upon a ruined city and a grieving nation, yet hope was not extinguished. He confessed, “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Hosea proclaimed the Lord’s desire to heal the backslider (Hosea 14:4). Isaiah invited the thirsty to come freely to the waters of God’s grace and receive the everlasting covenant (Isaiah 55:1-3).

Even in judgment, mercy held out its hand to all who would return.

That love shines brightest in Jesus Christ. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16).

“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, made us alive together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:4-5).

“When the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared…according to His mercy He saved us” (Titus 3:4-7). The cross is the everlasting monument to the steadfast love of the Lord.

Those who have received such love are called to reflect it. “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4:9–11).

We forgive because we have been forgiven (Colossians 3:12–13). We bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). We walk in love, “as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us” (Ephesians 5:2).

The steadfast love of the Lord is not merely admired. It is lived.

One day faith will become sight. The redeemed will stand before the throne and sing, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:10).

There will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain, for the former things will have passed away (Revelation 21:4).

The love that sought us in Eden, redeemed us at Calvary, and sustained us through every trial will rejoice over us forever.

Truly, “the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him” (Psalms 103:17).

_____________

Father, we thank You for Your steadfast love that never fails. Open our eyes to see its depth, humble our hearts to receive it with gratitude, and teach us to reflect it in our words and deeds. Help us trust Your mercy in every season, cling to Your promises, and walk faithfully with Christ until the day we stand in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
