THE POWER OF CALM WORDS

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1)

One quality that many observers noted during President Barack Obama’s years in office was his calm and measured manner of speaking, especially in moments of public crisis. While opinions about his decisions differed, his demeanor serves as a reminder of a timeless biblical principle: composure is often more powerful than commotion.

The Bible teaches that a gentle answer can accomplish what loud arguments never will.

Our world rewards the sharp comeback, the cutting remark, and the raised voice. Social media has become a battlefield where people compete to win arguments rather than hearts. But Jesus never called His followers to mirror the spirit of the age. Instead, He calls us to be peacemakers, speaking truth with grace and responding to hostility with wisdom.

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:19-20). Calmness is not weakness. It is strength under the control of the Holy Spirit. Anyone can react in anger, but it takes spiritual maturity to pause, pray, and answer with kindness. A controlled tongue often prevents wounds that an apology can never fully heal.

The next time you find yourself in a heated conversation, remember that your words represent Christ. Before speaking, ask yourself whether your response will build a bridge or burn one. The Lord has given us the privilege of using our speech to encourage, comfort, correct, and point others toward Him. A gentle spirit can quiet a storm that force could never calm.

______________

Prayer

Father, guard my tongue and govern my heart. Help me to listen carefully, speak wisely, and answer gently, even when emotions run high. May my words reflect the grace of Christ and bring peace wherever You send me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
