THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK SOULS
The Lord Jesus Christ did not come to establish a museum for polished saints. He came to open a hospital for sick souls.
He Himself declared, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance” (Mark 2:17).
Every weary heart, every guilty conscience, every life broken by sin finds an open door in Him.
The Great Physician never turns away the one who comes in humility. His waiting room is filled with those who have discovered that they cannot heal themselves.
Many labor under the mistaken thought that they must first become better before they may come to Christ. But the Bible teaches the opposite. We come because we are helpless. We come because the disease of sin has spread into every faculty of the soul.
Like the leper who fell before Jesus, crying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean,” we cast ourselves entirely upon His mercy (Luke 5:12).
The touch of Christ reaches deeper than outward behavior. He heals the hidden wounds of pride, unbelief, bitterness, fear, and shame. What no earthly physician can reach, the Son of God restores.
The treatment prescribed in this heavenly hospital is unlike anything the world offers. The medicine is God’s grace. The cleansing is through the blood of Christ, “for the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (- John 1:7).
The nourishment is God’s word, which strengthens the inner man day by day (Matthew 4:4).
The breath of renewed life is prayer, through which the soul continually receives fresh strength from the presence of God (Philippians 4:6-7).
As we remain near the Great Physician, healing continues to flow into every wounded place.
The Great Physician also appoints nurses for His patients. Faithful believers comfort the weak, encourage the discouraged, restore those overtaken in sin with gentleness, and bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:1-2).
The church is never meant to be a courtroom for the broken but a place where grace leads sinners to repentance and growing holiness. Every member who has received mercy is called to become an instrument of mercy toward others.
Sometimes the healing seems slow. The patient may wonder whether the Physician has forgotten him. No, Christ never abandons those under His care. Even painful discipline is administered in perfect love, removing the infection of sin and producing the peaceful fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:10-11).
The Great Physician never makes a mistake in His diagnosis. He knows exactly what each soul requires, and His wisdom is always joined with infinite compassion.
One day every patient who has trusted in Christ will leave the hospital completely whole. Every scar of sin will disappear. Every weakness will be gone. Every tear will be wiped away.
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).
Until that glorious day, let us remain near the Great Physician, trusting His hand, resting in His love, and believing that He who has begun a good work in us will complete it (Philippians 1:6).
____________
Heavenly Father, I come to You as one who needs the healing that only Christ can give. Search my heart and reveal every hidden disease of sin. Wash me in the blood of Your Son, strengthen me through Your word, teach me to depend upon You in prayer, and make me an instrument of Your healing grace to others. Keep me near the Great Physician until the day I stand before You completely restored in His glorious presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
