THE FIRST PROMISE
Genesis 3 records the darkest chapter in human history. Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, and sin entered the world. Shame replaced innocence, fear replaced fellowship, and death became the consequence of rebellion.
But before they ever left the garden, God revealed His mercy. In the midst of judgment, He gave the first promise of a coming Savior. The Lord declared to the serpent, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel” (Genesis 3:15).
DECEPTION. Satan’s first attack was against God’s word. He asked Eve, “Has God indeed said…?” (Genesis 3:1). By questioning God’s truth, he led her to doubt God’s goodness.
Temptation still follows the same pattern today. When we listen to voices that contradict the Bible, we place ourselves in danger. James wrote “each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed” (James 1:14). The safest place for every believer is to trust what God has spoken.
DISOBEDIENCE. Eve took the fruit, Adam joined her, and together they sinned against the Lord. Immediately, “the eyes of both of them were opened” (Genesis 3:7), and they discovered guilt instead of wisdom. They hid from God because sin always separates us from the One who made us.
Their story became our story, for “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Every act of disobedience promises satisfaction but ultimately brings sorrow.
DELIVERANCE. Although God pronounced judgment, He also proclaimed hope. The promised Seed would one day crush the serpent’s head, though His own heel would be bruised (Genesis 3:15). This pointed forward to Jesus Christ, who defeated Satan through His death and resurrection.
Before Adam and Eve left Eden, “the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21). An innocent life was given so their shame could be covered, foreshadowing the perfect sacrifice of Christ, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
Genesis 3 is not only the story of humanity’s fall. It is also the beginning of God’s plan to redeem fallen people. Where sin entered, grace appeared. Where Satan seemed to win, God announced his defeat. The Bible opens with paradise lost, but it moves steadily toward paradise restored through Jesus Christ.
May we reject deception, flee disobedience, and rejoice in God’s deliverance. The promised Seed has come. Through Jesus Christ, the power of sin has been broken, forgiveness is freely offered, and all who trust in Him have the hope of eternal life.
