THE DIVINE SUMMONS 8-16-26
A summons is an official order to appear. When a court sends one, you do not ignore it without facing heavy consequences (Romans 13:1-2). But when God summons us through the Gospel, He is not looking to tear us down. In His incredible mercy, His call is a royal invitation to freedom, life, and peace (John 3:17; Romans 8:1).
Throughout the Bible, God speaks directly to real people and calls them to action—telling Abram to leave his homeland (Genesis 12:1-3), telling Moses to stand before Pharaoh (Exodus 3:4-10), and telling everyday fishermen to drop their nets and follow Jesus (Matthew 4:18-20).
When God calls, we are expected to listen and obey (Acts 17:30-31).
The amazing thing about the Gospel is that God was never under any obligation to save a single one of us. He owes us nothing. Just because someone exercises faith does not mean God is suddenly in their debt. Faith is not a good work that earns a reward or merits salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 4:4-5).
God is completely sovereign, meaning He sits on the throne and makes the rules. In His absolute freedom, God determined His own plan for salvation: He predestined that anyone who chooses to trust in His Son will be saved (John 3:16; John 6:40). He did not have to set it up this way, but in His grace, He chose to.
At the exact same time, God deeply respects the will He gave us. He built us with the genuine ability to make choices, protecting our human autonomy rather than treating us like pre-programmed robots (Deuteronomy 30:19; Joshua 24:15).
He extends a genuine invitation to every searching heart, but He leaves the decision in our hands. His summons demands a personal response: turning away from our sin and putting our trust entirely in Jesus Christ (Mark 1:15, Acts 20:21).
When you hear the Gospel, you are hearing the King of the universe calling you by name. He gives us the real power to choose, but He is the one who graciously offers the gift. Heaven’s door is wide open, and the invitation is simple: whoever wants to come may come and take the water of life freely (Revelation 22:17).
Salvation is entirely God's gracious setup from start to finish, and what He demands is that we hear His call, choose His Son, and obey (Hebrews 5:9).
