#9 THE CIRCUMCISION WITHOUT HANDS 11-5-26

There were those in the early church who struggled to accept the full implications of the gospel. Some Jewish believers continued to regard their national identity as a special qualification for belonging to God. They seemed to operate under a kind of spiritual “most favored nation” status, believing that God’s ultimate interest and covenant blessings were confined uniquely to Israel. The language of Song of Solomon 6:3, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine,” could easily become, in their minds, an expression of exclusive national privilege.

Consequently, circumcision became a point of contention. Certain Jewish Christians insisted that circumcision was necessary for Gentile believers to be right with God. It was not enough, in their estimation, to come to Christ through faith; one must also submit to the requirements of the Jewish covenant. This controversy appears prominently in the early church and is addressed throughout Paul’s ministry.

But Paul offers a remarkable answer in Colossians 2:11. He speaks of a circumcision that is not performed by human hands: “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ.”

Here was the circumcision that truly mattered. It was not an outward operation performed upon the physical body, but an inward transformation accomplished through Jesus Christ. The old nature was being put away, not through human ceremony, national ancestry, or religious achievement, but through the saving work of Christ.

Paul was not teaching that physical circumcision was necessary for salvation. Rather, he was showing that its spiritual fulfillment was found in Christ.

The gospel had opened the door to something greater than national privilege. In Christ, the defining mark of belonging to God was no longer an outward distinction, but a transformed life. The circumcision without hands was the work of Christ upon the heart.
