OBEDIENCE OVER OPPOSITION 5-13-26

Acts 5 demonstrates that following Christ will sometimes put us in direct opposition to the world. The apostles were preaching Jesus, performing signs, and proclaiming the resurrection. The religious leaders became angry and had them arrested and put in prison. An angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and told them to go back to the temple and speak to the people. Their circumstances had not changed, but their assignment had not changed either (Acts 5:17–20).

When the apostles were brought before the council, they gave a simple answer: “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). That ought to be the conviction of every Christian. We respect people, we honor authority, and we seek peace, but when the command of man conflicts with the command of God, our loyalty must remain with God. Faithfulness is not measured by how little opposition we face, but by whether we remain faithful when opposition comes.

The apostles were beaten and commanded not to preach in the name of Jesus. What did they do? They rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for His name. Then they went right back to teaching and preaching Jesus Christ (Acts 5:40–42). They did not allow suffering to silence them. They did not allow threats to intimidate them. They did not allow rejection to change their message.

That is powerful—when people who have settled the question of whom they will obey. When God has first place in our hearts, opposition cannot easily move us. We may be criticized. We may be misunderstood. We may suffer loss. But we can still stand because our confidence is not in the approval of men. Our confidence is in the Lord.

The message of Acts 5 is simple: obey God, endure opposition, and keep preaching Jesus. The world may resist the truth, but that does not make the truth any less true. Our responsibility is not to make everyone happy. Our responsibility is to remain faithful.

PRAYER: Father, give me the courage of the apostles. Help me obey You when obedience is difficult, stand when I am opposed, and remain faithful when I suffer. Never let fear of people become greater than my love for You. Give me boldness to speak of Jesus and strength to keep going when the road is hard. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
