LOOK TO JESUS, NOT TO YESTERDAY
One of Satan’s favorite weapons is to keep us looking backward. He reminds us of old failures, painful memories, words we wish we had never spoken, and opportunities we wish we had never missed. If he can keep our eyes fixed on yesterday, he can rob us of the joy, usefulness, and peace God has prepared for today.
The Lord never intended His children to live chained to their past. His grace is always calling us forward.
Jesus also warned us about another distraction. In Matthew 7:3 He asked, “And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?” How easy it is to dwell on the faults of others while forgetting our own constant need for mercy. A heart occupied with criticizing others soon loses sight of Christ. But a heart humbled by God’s grace becomes patient, forgiving, and compassionate.
The writer of Hebrews gives us the cure: “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Our victory is not found by staring at our failures or at the failures of others. It is found by fixing our eyes upon the Savior. The more we behold Him, the more His love reshapes our hearts. His forgiveness becomes the pattern for our forgiveness. His mercy becomes the measure of our mercy.
When our attention is centered on Christ, yesterday no longer controls us. We can leave our sins beneath His cross, extend grace to those who have hurt us, and walk confidently into the future He has prepared. God is always at work in the present, accomplishing things we cannot see if we are constantly looking over our shoulder.
Today, choose to lift your eyes. Refuse to let guilt, regret, or resentment steal another moment of your life. Look to Jesus. Trust His promises. Follow His footsteps. As your heart rests in Him, you will discover that forgiveness brings freedom, peace replaces anxiety, and hope shines brighter than every shadow of the past.
