Grace is one of the most wonderful words in the vocabulary of the Christian faith. It describes God’s intervention on behalf of His rebellious creation, arising from His own nature rather than any obligation imposed upon Him. God does not extend grace because humanity has earned it, but because He is gracious. His intervention in Jesus Christ is so radical and far-reaching that it changes our standing before Him and transforms the way we live each day.
Romans 5 introduces us to this wonderful reality. Paul writes in Romans 5:2, “through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand.” Notice that grace is not merely something we encountered when we first believed. It is the very ground upon which we continue to stand.
THE POSITION OF GRACE
Through Jesus Christ, we have been justified by faith and brought into a new relationship with God. Romans 5:1 declares, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Our standing does not rest upon our personal merit but upon the finished work of Christ. We stand in grace!
THE PROVISION OF GRACE
Grace does not end with our justification. God continues to provide for His children through Christ. Every day brings new opportunities to experience His sustaining mercy, strength, wisdom, and care. Hebrews 4:16 invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. We never outgrow our need for His provision.
THE PRACTICE OF GRACE
We are not merely to receive grace; we are to walk in it. Our daily conduct should reflect the gracious character of the One who saved us. Colossians 2:6 instructs us, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.” The grace that brought us to Christ must continue to shape our thoughts, decisions, relationships, and service.
Grace is where we began, where we stand, and the provision upon which we depend. Let us never attempt to live the Christian life apart from the grace that made it possible.
