Halloween brings with it images of strange creatures, dark forests, haunted places, and mysterious sounds in the night. But long before Halloween decorations filled our neighborhoods, the prophet Isaiah wrote about a strange gathering of creatures in a place of desolation. In Isaiah 34:14, we find a fascinating description of what happens when God’s judgment falls upon a land.
Isaiah describes a place where “the wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the jackals, and the wild goat shall bleat to its companion; also the night creature shall rest there and find for herself a place of rest” (Isaiah 34:14).
What exactly was this night creature? The Hebrew word translated this way has been associated with a nocturnal animal, sometimes identified with an owl or another creature of the wilderness. Some older translations have rendered it as a screech owl. Whatever the precise identification, Isaiah paints a remarkable picture of a desolate place where unusual creatures make their home.
The setting is important. Isaiah is describing God’s judgment against Edom. A once-inhabited land would become a wilderness. Human activity would disappear, and the sounds of civilization would be replaced by the cries of wild animals. The night creatures would occupy places where people once lived.
Think about that picture. A place can look impressive today and become desolate tomorrow. Human achievements, earthly kingdoms, and worldly power are temporary. God alone possesses lasting authority.
There is also a spiritual lesson worth considering. Darkness is not merely something that belongs to Halloween. The Bible frequently uses darkness to describe the condition of a world separated from God. Jesus declared Himself to be “the light of the world” (John 8:12). Those who follow Him do not have to wander through spiritual darkness.
Paul reminded Christians in 1 Thessalonians 5:5, “You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.”
Remember the One who conquered darkness itself. The grave could not hold Him, death could not defeat Him, and the darkness could not overcome His light.
