“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
There is an old song in the Great American Songbook called “Harbor Lights.” It tells of someone watching the lights along the harbor as a loved one sails away. Those lights once represented happiness, but now they remind the heart of separation and sorrow.
Isn’t it interesting how the meaning of a light can change depending on where we stand? For someone coming home, a harbor light is a welcome sight. For someone watching a loved one depart, that same light can become a reminder of loss.
Life is much the same. Sometimes the waters are calm, and the destination seems clear. Other times, storms arise, circumstances change, and we wonder what lies ahead. Thankfully, God has not left us to navigate the darkness alone. He has given us His Word to guide us, His presence to sustain us, and His Son to bring us home.
THE LIGHT THAT SHOWS US
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).
A lamp in biblical times illuminated the ground immediately before a traveler. It might not reveal the entire journey, but it provided enough light for the next step. Often, that is how God leads us. We want to see ten years ahead, but God teaches us to trust Him today.
The Bible provides direction in a world filled with competing voices. It helps us distinguish right from wrong, recognize danger, and remain faithful when temptation calls us away from the truth. David declared, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).
We may not understand every circumstance, but we can obey what God has revealed. You may not have enough light to see the whole journey, but you have enough light to take the next step with God.
THE LIGHT THAT SUSTAINS US
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
Sometimes darkness comes through grief, disappointment, sickness, or uncertainty. We discover that we need more than directions. We need the assurance that we are not alone.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me” (Psalm 23:4). Notice that David still walks through the valley. Faith does not promise a life without storms; it reminds us that God remains faithful through them.
Our feelings may fluctuate, and our circumstances may change, but God’s promises remain trustworthy. Isaiah 41:10 says that we need not fear because God is with us.
Sometimes God strengthens us through prayer, the encouragement of fellow Christians, or the kindness of a faithful friend. His light may not immediately remove our difficulties, but His presence can sustain us through them.
The darkness of your circumstances does not mean the absence of your God.
THE LIGHT THAT SAVES US
Jesus told His disciples, “In my Father’s house are many mansions” (John 14:2). When Thomas asked how they could know the way, Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
Jesus does more than point us toward home. He is the way to the Father. Through His death and resurrection, He provides forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Our hope rests not in our own goodness but in the saving work of our Lord.
This world is not our final home. Earthly plans change, bodies grow older, and painful goodbyes eventually come. Revelation 21:4 promises a day when God will wipe away every tear, and death, sorrow, crying, and pain will be no more.
The Bible never promises that every earthly journey will end as we wish. It promises something greater: eternal life with Christ for those who belong to Him.
When you know who is waiting for you at the end of the journey, you can face the uncertainties along the way.
KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE LIGHT
Imagine a ship approaching shore on a dark, stormy night. The waves are rough, the wind is blowing, and the coastline is difficult to see. Yet a light shines through the darkness, giving the sailors direction and helping them find safety.
That is what God’s Word does for us, and Jesus Christ offers us something even greater than a guiding light. He offers us Himself.
When you do not know which way to go, turn to God. When sorrow surrounds you, remember His presence. When tomorrow seems uncertain, hold firmly to His promises.
The harbor lights of this world may grow dim. People may leave us, circumstances may disappoint us, and earthly plans may change. But God’s Word remains true, His faithfulness remains sure, and Jesus remains our hope.
Keep your eyes on the light. Keep your faith in the Lord. Keep walking in His truth.
The harbor lights may tell us of those who have sailed away, but the light of Christ reminds us that, through Him, we have a home ahead.
