#339 PERSISTENCE IN PRAYER 10-26-26

Jesus condemned the pretentious and repetitious prayers of the Pharisees, who supposed they would be heard because of their many words (Matthew 6:7-8). Prayer is not a performance designed to impress people, nor is it a formula by which we manipulate God. Our Father knows what we need before we ask Him.

But Jesus also taught us the importance of persistence in prayer.

In Luke 11:5-9, Jesus tells of a man who visits his friend at midnight asking for bread. Although the friend initially refuses, the man continues asking until his persistence brings a response. Jesus concludes, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9).

In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus tells of a persistent widow who repeatedly appeals to an unjust judge for justice. Her continued appeals eventually bring a response. Jesus uses this contrast to teach that God’s people should “always pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1).

Persistence does not mean that God is reluctant or that we must wear Him down. Rather, we demonstrate faith by continuing to trust Him, even when answers seem delayed. Prayer keeps our hearts turned toward God while we wait upon His wisdom and timing.

_______________

Heavenly Father, teach us to pray faithfully without losing heart. Strengthen our faith when answers seem delayed, and help us trust Your wisdom, goodness, and perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
