#296 WHEN LIFE DOESN'T GO ACCORDING TO PLAN 10-17-26
Have you ever spent hours planning out your week, only to watch everything fall apart by Tuesday morning? It happens all the time. We build massive to-do lists, schedule out our calendar, and act like we’ve got complete control over what’s coming next. But if we’re being honest, we rarely do.
That’s basically what James is talking about near the end of chapter 4. He brings up this example of folks saying, “Today or tomorrow we’ll go to this city, spend a year there, do business, and make a profit.” Sounds like a solid business plan. But James drops a serious reality check on them. He reminds us that we don’t even know what tomorrow looks like, let alone next year. Life is short—like a quick puff of smoke that shows up for a second and then vanishes.
Now, James isn’t saying it’s wrong to make plans or think ahead. The issue is leaving God out of the equation entirely and acting like we run the show. Arrogant confidence makes us think we’re in total charge, but peace actually comes from loosening our grip. Instead of boasting about where we’ll be next year, James suggests a simple mindset shift: “If it’s the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
Living this way changes how you handle everyday stress. You still do your best and plan responsible steps, but you hold onto those plans with open hands. When things get derailed, you don’t panic, because you know God is ultimately guiding your steps. Trusting Him with tomorrow lets you actually enjoy today.
