#286 IS IT WELL WITH YOUR SOUL? 10-15-26
In 2 Kings 4, we read about a Shunammite woman whose only son had died. In the midst of her sorrow, she traveled to find the prophet Elisha. When asked, “Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?” she answered, “It is well” (2 Kings 4:26). Her circumstances were heartbreaking, yet her faith carried her toward the God who could help her.
There is a question more important than the condition of our health, the size of our bank account, or the comfort of our circumstances: Is it well with our soul?
THE CONDITION OF THE SOUL
We spend considerable time caring for our bodies while neglecting the condition of our souls. Jesus asked, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26). A person may possess earthly riches while remaining spiritually impoverished. We must examine our hearts honestly, asking whether we are walking in fellowship with Christ and allowing His word to govern our lives. Our greatest need is not a better reputation before men, but a right relationship with God.
THE COMFORT OF THE SAVIOR
The hymn It Is Well with My Soul was written by Horatio Spafford after he experienced devastating personal loss. Its message reminds us that peace does not depend upon favorable circumstances. Jesus promised His disciples, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you” (John 14:27). The world offers temporary relief, but Christ gives a peace that can sustain us through sorrow, uncertainty, and suffering. When our confidence rests in Him, the storms of life cannot destroy the foundation of our hope.
THE CERTAINTY OF SALVATION
“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). God does not want us to wander through life in spiritual uncertainty. Through Jesus Christ, we can have forgiveness, reconciliation, and the hope of resurrection. Our confidence rests not in our perfection, but in the grace and faithfulness of our Lord.
So let us ask ourselves the question that reaches deeper than every earthly concern: Is it well with our soul? When Christ is our Savior, His peace is our comfort, and eternity is our hope, we can face even the darkest valley with confidence in God.
