#285 THE MINISTRY OF ENCOURAGEMENT 10-14-26
God has given us the remarkable ability to strengthen another person's heart with a few well-chosen words. A discouraged soul may find renewed courage through a timely conversation, a weary believer may regain strength through a simple prayer, and a struggling Christian may find hope through a reminder of God's faithfulness. Encouragement is not a small ministry. It is one of the ways we help bear one another's burdens.
THE POWER OF A WORD
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver” (Proverbs 25:11). Words can wound, but they can also heal. The right word, spoken at the right time, can bring light into someone's darkest hour. We should ask God to help us speak words that build up rather than tear down, remembering that our speech should minister grace to those who hear us (Ephesians 4:29).
THE PRACTICE OF PRESENCE
Sometimes encouragement requires more than words. “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). The ministry of presence means standing beside someone in sorrow, listening without rushing to offer explanations, and reminding the lonely that they have not been forgotten. Even when we cannot solve another person's problems, we can demonstrate the love of Christ by refusing to abandon them in their struggles.
THE PROMISE OF PERSEVERANCE
The writer of Hebrews commands believers to encourage one another daily (Hebrews 3:13). Encouragement helps weary Christians continue walking faithfully when the road becomes difficult. A timely reminder of God's promises can keep someone from surrendering to despair. We may never know how much good one act of kindness accomplishes, but God sees every faithful deed.
The world has enough critics, complainers, and faultfinders. Let us become people who strengthen the weak, comfort the sorrowful, and inspire the faithful. We cannot make every burden disappear, but we can help someone carry it. Sometimes the ministry that changes a life begins with a simple sentence: “Keep going. God has not forsaken you.”
