#274 THE BEAUTY OF A FAITHFUL LIFE 10-12-26
The brief letter of 3 John demonstrates that greatness in the kingdom of God is not measured by popularity, possessions, or position. It is measured by faithfulness. John commends Gaius because his life reflected the truth he professed, demonstrating that genuine Christianity must be practiced as well as preached.
THE WALK OF TRUTH
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 4). Notice that Gaius did not merely know the truth or speak about the truth. He walked in it. His daily conduct demonstrated his commitment to God.
Our faith should influence our conversations, decisions, relationships, and responsibilities. The truth we profess on Sunday should govern our behavior on Monday. Christianity is not simply a collection of beliefs we defend, but a way of life we demonstrate.
THE WORK OF LOVE
John praises Gaius for showing hospitality to traveling believers and supporting their work for the truth (3 John 5-8). His love was practical. He did not simply wish others well; he helped them accomplish their mission.
We may not preach before crowds or travel to distant lands, but we can encourage the discouraged, assist the needy, and strengthen those who labor for the Lord. Every act of service becomes meaningful when it is offered in love.
THE WARNING OF PRIDE
Diotrephes loved to have the preeminence and refused to receive John's authority (3 John 9-10). His example warns us that religious activity can coexist with selfish ambition. A person may desire influence more than service and recognition more than righteousness.
Jesus taught that greatness belongs to those who serve others (Matthew 20:26-28). The faithful Christian seeks to honor Christ rather than elevate himself.
