#246 FAITH THAT SHOWS UP 10-7-26
Faith is more than something we say we have. James 2 reminds us that genuine faith eventually becomes visible. It gets out of the head and into the hands. It changes how we see people, how we treat people, and how we respond when someone is hurting.
FAITH THAT SEES
James begins with something painfully practical: partiality. We can look at a person and immediately decide what they are worth by their clothing, position, wealth, or appearance. But God does not see as man sees. “For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). James says, “Do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality” (James 2:1). Faith teaches us to see people differently. The poor man is not less valuable. The wealthy man is not more valuable. Every person bears a soul that will live forever. “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:8).
FAITH THAT SERVES
James then brings faith down to the level of daily life. “If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food” and we simply say, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them what they need, “what does it profit?” (James 2:15-16). Words are easy. Compassion requires movement. John asks, “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17). Living faith sees a need and refuses to walk past it. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
FAITH THAT SHOWS
Finally, James says, “I will show you my faith by my works” (James 2:18). Abraham showed his faith when he obeyed God. Rahab showed her faith when she received the messengers and sent them out another way (James 2:21-25). Faith is not merely believing that God exists. Even the demons believe that, James says (James 2:19). Faith that lives will act. Faith that acts will obey. Faith that obeys will show.
We are not saved because we have performed enough good works to purchase salvation. We are saved by God’s grace through faith, and that faith produces a changed life. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10).
A living faith has eyes that see, hands that serve, and a life that shows.
James leaves us with words that are impossible to misunderstand: “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26).
Faith sees. Faith serves. Faith shows.
