#199 FREE AS A BIRD 9-27-26
Wwatching a bird rise into the morning sky is a beautiful thing. It does not carry a suitcase of yesterday behind it. It does not sit on a telephone wire wondering what everyone else thinks about the direction it is flying. It simply spreads its wings and goes. Jesus came to give us that kind of freedom, only infinitely greater. “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). Sin creates a prison with invisible bars. Guilt chains the heart to yesterday. Fear keeps us perched when God has given us wings. But Christ came to set captives free. “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). The Christian does not have to spend life looking backward at the chains Christ has already broken.
But Christian freedom is not freedom to fly wherever our flesh wants to take us. It is freedom to become what God intended us to be. Paul wrote, “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). The bird is free because it lives according to what it was created to be. In the same way, we discover true freedom not by escaping God’s will but by embracing it. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31–32). The world often calls freedom the absence of restraint. Jesus calls freedom the presence of truth.
So spread your wings today. Stop carrying burdens Christ has told you to lay down. Stop allowing the opinions of others to become chains around your soul. Stop living as though your past has the last word when Jesus has already spoken grace. “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). You belong to Christ, and “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17). There will still be storms, difficult days, disappointments, and valleys, but you do not have to live chained to them. The child of God can look toward heaven, breathe deeply, open the wings of faith, and keep moving forward. Not because life is always easy, but because Christ has made us free indeed.
